When you need a wood with flexibility, strength, and resilience, consider hickory. With high bending strength and crushing strength, high stiffness, and very high shock resistance, its outstanding combination of properties makes hickory great for striking tools like the hammers and axes, and also for sports equipment like bats and golf clubs. Hickory grows in North America, from southeastern Canada to the eastern half of the United States. The heartwood is sold as red hickory; the sapwood is sold as white hickory. This wood shrinks considerably when drying but then is stable. It causes moderate blunting of cutting edges.
The sapwood of Hickory is nearly white; the heartwood is creamy to pinkish brown. The grain is straight, close, and finely textured. It is moderately hard and heavy, extremely tough, and resilient. Hickory is used for tool handles, ladder rungs, sports equipment, furniture, turnings, and cabinetry. Hickory is sold in two classes; natural and select. Natural hickory is mostly heartwood cuts with the full range of color, character and knots as it comes from the log. Wane (bark), pith (degrees of rot), and large knots will be cut out. Select hickory will be 95% clear wood on the prime face with an occasional pin knot in some boards. Lumber is sold by the board foot which is a volume measurement equaling 144-cubic inches after drying but before machining processes. Allow about a 10% loss for edge straightening and other machining.
